Laikim PNG is a tourism business but it is so much more than this.
I was asked to create the business and strategy for a tourism business in Papua New Guinea.
The goal was to create at least $200 million USD of value. This goal was set as part of our initial scoping and was created for accountability purposes. The founder of Laikim PNG Erue Taunao wanted to set a goal to make a huge difference to the people of her country. And it was a big goal, at the time, only 7,000 people a year visited PNG for tourism only purposes (excluding the Kokoda Trail).
Laikim PNG is the largest marketer of Papua New Guinea tourism.
Tourism creates jobs in villages and towns, allowing the people of PNG to live and work within their own villages, towns and cultures. Tourism in their villages and towns encourages them to maintain their cultural identity, language, environment and traditions. For a country with over 800 languages and just as many cultures, for humanity to lose this diversity would be a shame.
Laikim PNG may be the largest tourism operator by area covered in Papua New Guinea.
They not only sell their own tours, they also sell the tours of other tourism operators in PNG, providing their technical infrastructure to tourism businesses all over Papua New Guinea.
They invented rugby league tours to Papua New Guinea in 2022 and have provided tours to international and in country tourists for every PNG Hunters Game and every PMs13 game since.
They have the largest number of local tours operating out of Port Moresby of any tour operator.
They have curated relationships in areas of PNG where tourism has never existed and bring tourists to these remote and hard to access (culturally) locations. Bringing jobs.
They have curated relationships with medium and large business to expand job opportunities in and around resource projects.
